I am actually salivating when I’m writing this post. I miss the taste of it, too bad I can’t get this at Penang. Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea is a famous stall selling authentic Hainan Coffee and toasted bread which is located at Imbi Market.

My bf’s brother introduced this place to us during our last trip to KL.

Toasted bread with butter and kaya or known as roti kahwin. Just a simple piece of bread, but it tasted soo good! The bread texture is slightly crunchy on the outside and so soft in the inside.

A bite into the bread which is spread with home made kaya and a piece of butter, the taste is just heavenly! A taste of sweet and slightly salty butter melt in my mouth, make me can’t stop bitting on the bun.

I had this type of bun in some coffee shop in Penang, but they don’t taste as good as this one. I guess it’s due to the homemade kaya and the cold butter used. I love the generous amount of kaya spread within the bun and the butter which is just thick enough where you can feel it melt right in my mouth!

And 2 half boiled eggs to go with the toasted bread, a perfect breakfast! The way they serve the half boiled egg is very unique. It is served in a stainless steel mug with hot water inside. Meaning you have to watch the timing for your half boiled egg to get ready. Then you have to break the egg by yourself!

Allie’s been missing in action for quite sometime. Hope that my readers will forgive me as I’ve been caught up with something lately and it took lots and lots of my time. However, I managed to take a break from the tedious schedule.

This place is suitable for breakfast and also tea time. This is one of the gem in Penang Island. It’s just a simple stall located at a small alley in Campbell Street but it’s always crowded with people. Are you wondering now what food do they sell? Scroll down… but most Penangnites will know when they see the first picture.

Traditional toasted bread, steam bread and coffee. Bread is toasted on the charcoal which is use to boil the water to make coffee.

Just a simple toasted white bread spread with kaya and butter, but it’s simply good as a breakfast.

The steam version of it. The bread is so soft.

2 half boiled egg to go with the bread. What a perfect breakfast!

Not forgetting a cup of milo, is a must as my breakfast drink.

Apart from bread and half boiled egg, there are some pre-packed nasi lemak too. But too bad, there’s no ‘omph’ in this nasi lemak. Anyway, it tasted okay.

The coffee is the famous item in this cafe too, do order a cup if you drop by this cafe.

Toh Soon Cafe is located next to:

184 Campbell Street,
10100 Georgetown, Penang

For those who has been following my twitter, you would have noticed that I had a laksa marathon last week. Hmm… it’d be in 6 hours we’ve eaten 3 types of laksa. That’d be like a bowl of laksa in an interval of 2 hours. Oh… it definitely make me walks 3 feets away when I see any laksa stall.

Our first stop was Farlim Shell Station Laksa. I’ve read about this in a few blogs but didn’t manage to give it a try until last week. My bf recalled that 10 years ago, he had this laksa before. He was shocked that the small stall now had grown into a coffee shop.

At first we planned to order only a bowl of laksa to share among us, but when we entered the coffee shop the laksa soup aroma rushed into our nostril.

Ended up, one bowl for each of us. 2 big slices of fish served on top of the laksa which is rarely to be found in any laksa stall nowadays. The soup base is more clear which has less bits and small pieces of fish compare to Penang Hill Laksa.

As usual, I added some bird chili into my laksa as I prefer it to be more spicy.

The pile of fishes attracted my attention.

The lady stall owner runs the stall with the help of 2 Indonesian maids. Just imagine the business she has in a day.

Besides laksa, there’s a bah kua (dried meat) bread stall in the same coffee shop. Being a freak of dried meat, I can’t miss this lor.. Bread with dried meat and floss. Although it’s slightly pricey, RM 1.60 for it but the generous portion of meat floss somehow compensate it.

Other than meat floss and dried meat, there’s many other choices too such as luncheon meat, sausage, taiwan sausage and etc. As you can see, the other piece is with luncheon meat. This is merely bread with luncheon meat plus some sweet gravy which is different from the one I had at Sri Nibong Cafe. Both have their speciality though.

Popiah to be dipped into laksa soup. I learned to eat this way when I started to read food blogs. It’s kinda special and new to me

There are some fish crackers sold at the coffee shop too. There are packed in a long plastic bag and they are hanging at the laksa stall. What a sight!

Operation hours:

Bread Stall: 10am – 7pm

Laksa Stall: 11am – 7pm

Click here for map. This coffee shop is just located behind Farlim KFC.

** Guess which would be my next stop for another round of laksa…

This is a common place for Bayan Lepas workers. Sri Nibong Cafe is a corner lot coffee shop which is located at Sri Nibong opposite Ayer Cafe. When I first started to work at Phase 1 FIZ, my colleagues introduced this place to me. They told me the instant cook koay teow teng and the wan tan mee here taste good. This coffee shop is always full of people especially during breakfast and lunch hour. The environment is pretty warm and heaty which is the one thing that I don’t like about this place.

Minced meat, fish ball, slices of fish cake and a runny egg are the ingredients used to cook the koay teow teng. I personally feel that the quality has deteriorated over the years I’ve patronized this stall. Sometimes the koay teow used are in small pieces instead of flat long strand. Basically we have to use spoon to scoop the koay teow. Nothing much to shout about the soup base. My favourite would still be the one at Seng Thor Coffee Shop which of the soup base is definitely worth mentioning.

The runny egg is the only thing I like in this bowl of koay teow teng. Sound so pathetic huh. Well, this is just my personal taste ya.

However, the wan tan mee is still maintaining the standard and the quality. The noodle is rather thin comparing to 24hours wan tan mee or the one at Chulia Street. It’s almost similar to the one at Eng Loh Coffee Shop. Noodle texture is rather chewy and without any lye taste, the way I like my noodle to be.

Taste wise, it’s fragrant and the dark sauces tasted just right.

Toasted Bread with luncheon meat and egg as filling – finger food which you can order if the koay teow teng and wan tan mee cannot fill up your stomach.

You can opt for sausage, ham, cheese or other ingredients per your liking for the filling. There’s a wide variety to choose from.

Without any target eating place to go in a cloudy Saturday morning, we drove aimlessly from Bayan Lepas heading to Georgetown area and hoping to find some good food to fill our empty stomach. My bf make a turn after we passed E-gate. I suddenly recalled I’ve read from some food blogs that there’s a curry mee stall opposite Lam Wah Ee Hospital which worth a try.

Yeah! We’ve got a destination in mind and no longer need to drive around when our stomach is crying for food.

We make 2 wrong turns as we can’t locate any coffee shop opposite Lam Wah Ee. It’s quite hidden due to the low zinc roof top. Look out for the Lee Huat Cafe sign if you wanted to find this place.

There are quite a variety of choices available but to my very disappointment the curry mee stall was closed. Oh my… out of luck that day.

The dry koay teow luckily didn’t disappoint us, but it also didn’t overwhelm us. Some lard are found which means more fragrant but higher cholesterol. My cholesterol level is still within control the last 2 years I did my check up. Now? I didn’t know.. so eat first… worry later.

The fishball and the meatball were my favourite but it’s too few for a fishball and meatball lover like me.

We wanted to try out the hokkien mee here, but we’re too late as only lor mee was left. Lor mee is still new to me, but it tasted ok.

Garlic and shallots both are my enemy.. so I guess I just missed out the thing that enhance the lor mee taste and flavour.

Toasted bread with half boiled egg is available too. But my favourite would still be the Joo Leong Cafe toasted bread.

Half boiled egg seems like slightly over cooked. It just spoilt the best part of half boiled egg.

Joo Leong Cafe is a famous place where many people working in FIZ area will take their breakfast here.

This coffee shop is located on the way to Penang Airport, but it’s barely noticeable if you were driving along the way. But you can always spot the long stretched cars parking by the road side, all those are their customers.

This coffee shop is famous for it’s toasted bread (roti bakar) and half boiled egg. While waiting for our bread and egg to be served, we grabbed a packed of economic noodle to fill our hungry stomach.

It tasted pretty normal. Nothing much to brag about.

The toasted bread with a layer of butter spread on top.

The method to eat this toasted bread is to sprinkle some sugar on top of the bread and dip it into the half boiled egg. It taste havenly… (This is strictly for those who like half boiled egg. For those who don’t, I think they will feel disgusting)

This coffee shop open daily from early morning until 11++, closed on Monday.
