Wondering where to have your tea time at Penang? Whenever during weekend, I like to drive to Cintra Street for the Curry Chee Cheong Fun (ccf). When I found out this ccf in year 2008, I’m liking it until now.

The ccf is served with thick chicken curry gravy. I love mine to have some sweet sauce to mix with the curry. This will create a little sweetness in spiciness.

The thick curry gravy is full of curry and coconut juice fragrant. It goes very well with the bland ccf.

When you are at Cintra Street, apart from the curry chee cheung fun you can have chinese dumplings (bah chang), yam cake and tong sui too!

We wanted to have the chinese dumpling (bah chang) that day, but we were told they were sold out! (it was around 4pm that day). So my dear readers, if you would like to try out the bah chang, visit them earlier.

For a dessert lover like me, a bowl of red bean tong sui is perfect for the tea time. They cook the red bean together with mandarin orange peel which added fragrant to the sweet soup.

The yam cake tasted good too! I like the cubes of yam hidden inside the yam cake. It add some texture to the yam cake.

Dip it with sweet and chili sauce, it taste awesome!

Apart from the curry ccf, red bean soup and yam cake, there are more hawker food available at Cintra Street. Refer to What2seeonline for more yummy food!

Tea time! What’s for snacks today? How does a sweet and crispy fried banana fritters (pisang goreng) sound like?

Other than fried banana fritters, they have fried popiah, fried tapioca, fried glutinous rice cake and fried sweet potato. This stall is located opposite Tua Pui Curry Mee. Another stall that selling similar snacks is located near Heng Ee School.

As seen in the picture there’s a yellow banner hung at this stall. This indicate that the food is edible for those eating vegetarian during the 9th God Emperor Festival Month.

I love their fried banana fritters as it’s so crispy and the banana itself is so sweet. The thing that I prefer this stall is I don’t smell or taste any recycle oil smell for the deep frying.

Fried banana fritters fresh from the wok. Yummy!

As for the fried tapioca, I prefer the one at Heng Ee School despite the oil smell. This one is less sweet and less fluffy which is not to my preference.

I am actually salivating when I’m writing this post. I miss the taste of it, too bad I can’t get this at Penang. Ah Weng Koh Hainan Tea is a famous stall selling authentic Hainan Coffee and toasted bread which is located at Imbi Market.

My bf’s brother introduced this place to us during our last trip to KL.

Toasted bread with butter and kaya or known as roti kahwin. Just a simple piece of bread, but it tasted soo good! The bread texture is slightly crunchy on the outside and so soft in the inside.

A bite into the bread which is spread with home made kaya and a piece of butter, the taste is just heavenly! A taste of sweet and slightly salty butter melt in my mouth, make me can’t stop bitting on the bun.

I had this type of bun in some coffee shop in Penang, but they don’t taste as good as this one. I guess it’s due to the homemade kaya and the cold butter used. I love the generous amount of kaya spread within the bun and the butter which is just thick enough where you can feel it melt right in my mouth!

And 2 half boiled eggs to go with the toasted bread, a perfect breakfast! The way they serve the half boiled egg is very unique. It is served in a stainless steel mug with hot water inside. Meaning you have to watch the timing for your half boiled egg to get ready. Then you have to break the egg by yourself!

Allie’s been missing in action for quite sometime. Hope that my readers will forgive me as I’ve been caught up with something lately and it took lots and lots of my time. However, I managed to take a break from the tedious schedule.

This place is suitable for breakfast and also tea time. This is one of the gem in Penang Island. It’s just a simple stall located at a small alley in Campbell Street but it’s always crowded with people. Are you wondering now what food do they sell? Scroll down… but most Penangnites will know when they see the first picture.

Traditional toasted bread, steam bread and coffee. Bread is toasted on the charcoal which is use to boil the water to make coffee.

Just a simple toasted white bread spread with kaya and butter, but it’s simply good as a breakfast.

The steam version of it. The bread is so soft.

2 half boiled egg to go with the bread. What a perfect breakfast!

Not forgetting a cup of milo, is a must as my breakfast drink.

Apart from bread and half boiled egg, there are some pre-packed nasi lemak too. But too bad, there’s no ‘omph’ in this nasi lemak. Anyway, it tasted okay.

The coffee is the famous item in this cafe too, do order a cup if you drop by this cafe.

Toh Soon Cafe is located next to:

184 Campbell Street,
10100 Georgetown, Penang

Weekend always means late breakfast for me. So normally later in the evening we will have some light food before the dinner. Let’s go for some fried economic bihun, fried popiah and tong sui. How does that sound?

It’s a small stall located at Choi Wui Lei Tea Carden Coffee Shop which is located same row with Yaki Teppan Restaurant . It sells some light snack which includes popiah, chai koay, fried raddish cake, tong sui and etc.

This is the stall. There are a few choices of tong sui available; red bean soup, black glutinous rice soup, sweet potato soup and etc. The black glutinous tong sui is the hot selling item.

It’s thick and rich with black glutinous rice. The amount of coconut milk added is just nice to bring enough fragrant to the tong sui.

The coconut milk will only be added when you order the tong sui. I like black glutinous tong sui a lot

Economic fried noodle. This one just fall into the mediocre range. Lucky that enough ‘wok hei’ is present and the noodle is not too soggy. I’ve tasted very lousy economic fried noodle with very soggy noodle and no wok hei present. Plus tasted bland.

There are a few choices of add-on available; fried egg, luncheon meat and sausage.

Deep fried popiah and chai koay don’t shine. The popiah skin already turned soft and the chai koay’s skin was tad thick.

Anyway, it’s a good place to stop by for a quick afternoon snack. The tong sui is definitely my recommendation!

This stall is closed on Sunday. It opens around 11am – 4pm.

It’s always a happy day during weekend as it’s a non working day. Normally we would drive to town area for late breakfast. This is one of my favourite place for breakfast, the food are great and there are lots of choices.

My favourite would be curry mee. This curry mee stall has been featured by Rasa Rasa Penang.

It’s just a very simple bowl of curry mee with some long beans, marinated squid and bean curd. From the picture you also will know that this is my bowl of curry mee as you can’t see any cockles and pig’s blood. Yaya… I know you are going to say I just missed the best part of curry mee right? All my friends and colleagues also said the same thing everytime I eat curry mee with them. hehe…

What to do? I just don’t fancy those 2 ingredients and my health also won’t tolerate me to eat any cockles.

The soup base was very fragrant. The soup base is not as white as Air Itam Sister Curry Mee. As for the chili, Air Itam Sister Curry Mee is much spicier.

Although it’s not the first time I eat here, but it’s my first time to order char koay kak. It’s fragrant with adequate wok hei. The char koay kak is more to slighty wet version. There is a generous amount of pickle raddish which is to my liking.

Another of my must order food when I visit this place. Pancake. This pancake is fried with egg, raisin, banana & sesame until fragrant. The sweetness of banana and raisins go well with the flour. The outer layer of this pancake is fried until golden brown which enhance the fragrant. The one that I had at Sin Kim San coffee shop is not comparable to this.

This coffee shop is always crowded with people everytime I pay a visit here. Guess must be due to the good food huh.

What a lazy Sunday morning… I woke up late again. Not able to go to the famous Perak Road or One Corner Cafe Hokkien Mee again. *geram*! Why all the famous hokkien mee finish so early one… can’t they make more to sell? or… I actually should wake up earlier huh.

Since we are late, so no luck on the hokkien mee already. So we have to come out with another plan on what to have for our breakfast. My bf suggested the Fried Fish Fillet Bihun Soup at Macalister Road. I immediately agreed as I love the fish there. To our disappointment, we saw that the coffee shop is under renovation and the bihun soup stall was gone.

Later we found out that the bihun soup stall is going to stop operation for one month due to the renovation of the coffee shop.

After a moment of silent due to disappointment, suddenly I thought of this hokkien mee stall told by a friend of mine. It’s located just slightly opposite to the bihun stall. The Top Taste Hokkien Mee stall is located in Sin Kim San Coffee Shop.

You can never go to the wrong stall as the stall is decorated by a big prawn on top.

I am lucky lol as the hokkien mee was still available. The soup base was sweet and tasted so fragrant with mantis prawn. This bowl was with added mantis prawn. That’s a generous amount of mantis prawn huh.

This is a different version from the normal hokkien mee as this is flavoured with mantis prawn. If you are not a fan of mantis prawn, you can go to Presgrave Street at night for a bowl of normal hokkien mee. Tips for you: Go there when it’s later at night, then you’ll get to taste sweeter soup base.

My bf ordered char koay teow. As usual lor, without taugeh (bean sprout) one. To our disappointment the ckt was pretty tasteless. It’s lack of fragrant and spiciness. Somemore it’s very oily.

The pancake tasted normal to me. I feel that the raisin is not adequate.

It’s baking time again!

This nyonya layer kuih is no longer a stranger in our life. In my hometown, we called this kuih ‘9 layer kuih’.

We found this recipe in my aunt’s new cooking book and decided to give it a try after we bake the mango cheese cake.

Let me share with you the result before I share the recipe. This is how my layer kuih look like.
The colour looks a bit dull ya. But too much colouring also not good la. Haha…

Following the recipe, we only manage to produce 7 layers. Taste pretty good and it’s not too sweet.

Recipe:

Batter Ingredients:

200g rice flour
100g tapioca flour
10g sago flour
300ml thick coconut milk
1/2 tsp salt

Syrup:

220g caster sugar
400ml water

Colouring:

Few drops of red colouring

Method:

1. To make syrup, cook sugar and water until sugar is well dissolved, set aside.

2. Combine the batter ingredients, add in syrup. Strain it.

3. Divide batter mixture into 2 equal portions, mix one portion with red colouring. Leave the other portion white.

4. Line a greased 8 inches round cake tin with plastic sheet.

5. Pour a layer of white batter (about 150ml each layer) into the cake tin. Steam over high heat for 4-5 minutes. Then pour a layer of red batter and steam for further 5 minutes.

6. Repeat the above procedure until finished up the remaining batter. Steam the final layer at medium heat for another 10 – 15 minutes. Remove from heat, leave to cool, cut and serve.

I found out this stall at New World Park selling yummy banana pan cake. This stall is located next to the stall selling famous ba chang, chai kueh, tong sui and chee cheung fan.

The stall owner is very generous with the banana and also the grounded peanuts. The banana pancake tasted sweet and fragrant compliment to the banana and also the grounded peanuts. The edge of the pancake is crispy while the center of the pancake tasted soft.

Another alternate choice for afternoon snack will be a crispy pisang goreng which is located at the roundabout of Jalan Free School.
